Valentines activities

Alex is really into Valentine's Day. We were just talking about the month and she latched on to the idea of making Valentines cards. Because of this, she has started making hearts. I draw a big heart in a paper and she cuts them out. She has made a TON of them. Most are going to us. I've gotten several cards with "I luv Mom" on them. It is so sweet. David was playing in his room yesterday and Alex was sliding heart cards under his door. It has been a great way to get her practicing her cutting.

Today we did a couple more activities with hearts. The first one was a candy heart color sort and then a matching uppercase and lower case letter one. They loved the candy one because they got to eat the candies after they were sorted and counted. Then the ABC one was good too. They both colored their letters (Alex got lowercase and David upper). David colored for just a minute and Alex was diligent about getting them all fully colored. Then Alex cut them out and they worked as a team to match them. David knows some letters and Alex pointed to the ones he didn't know. Overall it was a good "lesson".

Since Alex is so interested in Valentine's Day, I also got them tiny mailboxes. Each morning they check them and find a little card from me inside. David's have a letter and a picture and Alex's have a short sentence to read with a picture. I'm trying to include a sight word as well as the ones she can sound out. Alex is doing pretty well with some sight words. At the suggestion of Lilly, I have taped some words up around the house and when I walk by, I tap them and say the word. She copies that and does the same (as does David). Then when we read books I point out those words as we read them. It's been a good way to go about it.

Last week we pretty much stuck to the normal "book work". So it's nice to mix it up a bit today.
